Tsunami hits Alaska: Estimated wave timings across US

Posted on July 30, 2025 by gulnws

Tsunami waves have begun hitting US shores following a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. Initial waves struck Alaska and have now reached Hawaii, where water levels in Haleiwa, Oahu, rose over 4 feet, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

A tsunami warning—the highest alert level—is in effect for Hawaii and parts of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, while the US West Coast remains under advisory. Waves are expected to arrive along the coast over the next several hours.

Estimated tsunami arrival times

(All in Pacific Time, with UAE time in brackets)

  • Oregon and Washington: ~11:35 p.m. PT (10:35 a.m. UAE)

  • California: ~11:50 p.m. PT (10:50 a.m. UAE)

  • San Francisco Bay: ~12:40 a.m. PT (11:40 a.m. UAE)

  • Los Angeles Harbor: ~1:00 a.m. PT (12:00 p.m. UAE)

Authorities warn of fluctuating water levels and potential multiple waves. Coastal residents are urged to evacuate if instructed and avoid shorelines until official clearance is given.
